Wine Growing Sites

Im WeinbergAround 60 percent of the estate PRINZ VON HESSEN's wine sites are classified as FIRST GROWTH SITES (Erste Gewächslagen) such as:

Johannisberger Klaus

This southward sited vineyard has a heavy, lime-rich loessic soil and gritty structure that is penetrated by groundwater coming from East. Elegant wines thrive here, especially fine and fruity, conditioned by the valued southern location and warm soil. They are quite substantial and reveal their fine notes after two to three years at earliest.

Winkeler Hasensprung

Already Goethe treasured the 1811 Hasensprung during his 1814 visit to the Rheingau. The south-eastern slope bears heavy loessic soil, mixed with superficial pebbles and compact loam soil. These conditions produce very rich wines with large volume, intense fruit, and harmonious acidity. Ranging from dry to sweet characters, this classic Riesling vineyard always has a great maturing potential.

Winkeler Jesuitengarten

This sunkissed southward leaning site has a heavy, lime-rich loess ground that produces middle-weight wines that are juicy with elegance and corpus, a fruity plaisanterie with pronounced acidity.

Kiedricher Sandgrub

Planted with Riesling vines to one-hundred percent, this site slopes toward the south. Due to the central terraces of the Rhine, the heavy loess and loam soil is overlayed with grit and sand. Strong, velvety, tenderly spiced wines thrive here with harmonious acidity, big expression and a lot of volume. The Kiedricher Sandgrub site produces strong, youthful wines for day to day consumption especially as a match for good dining. The emphasis is on dry wines, from high-quality wine to Spätlese. In good years, noble sweet wines also grow in this vineyard.
